Challenge Aspen is a non-profit organization based in Snowmass Village, Colorado, with the mission of making possibilities for people with disabilities. Though Challenge Aspen serves many people with varying types of disabilities, over the last few years, programs have been implemented specifically to offer hope and a new way of life to newly injured service men and women returning from current areas of conflict. In 2008, a new division called C.A.M.O. (Challenge Aspen Military Opportunities) was formed within Challenge Aspen to focus on the continuation and further development of these programs.
Through life-changing recreational experiences, soldiers faced with physical or mental challenges are empowered to learn something new, find trust in their abilities, and regain the self-esteem and confidence needed to move towards leading fulfilling and productive lives.
Currently, Challenge Aspen hosts more than 1,000 participants each year through various camps and festivals dedicated to persons with disabilities and their families. The disabled veterans attending these events are suffering from uncommon injuries such as bilateral above-the-knee amputations and traumatic brain injuries. These types of wounds, which in previous years would have proved fatal, are becoming a “signature injury” in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts due to the progression of technology.
Wounded veterans who have been involved with Challenge Aspen give emotional and powerful testimony to their programs' mental, emotional and spiritual healing power. Challenge Aspen is able to create a community experience for these soldiers by joining like-minded individuals who come together and find success.
