Challenge: Managing finances and depression
Now in the Air Force Reserves, Silvia endured a sexual assault during her service that has derailed her career goals and many life plans. Now her goal is to be as healthy as possible, and that includes financial health with the dream of owning her own home for her and her daughter.
Now in the Air Force Reserves, Silvia has been deployed twice, to Iraq in 2010 and Oman in 2013. She has had the pleasure of serving with immense gratitude for a nation that welcomed her family as political refugees from Peru. Her dream has always been to honorably complete 20 years of service, but due to sexual assault, all of her career goals and many life plans have been derailed.
As she explains, “Denial is a powerful tool that allowed me to keep going after the 2012 assault. Unfortunately, it also blinded me to the toll it was taking on my health, my relationships and my finances. Thanks to the VA, I am finally confronting the many issues resulting from the assault, though it has not been easy. My goal is to be as healthy as possible, and that includes financial health with the new dream of owning my own home. To have my finances improve would help a lot with the anxiety I have every day.”
