Challenge: Riding a bike with both arms
Due to a brachial plexus injury, James only has one functional arm. Riding a bicycle using only one arm is particularly challenging; James wants to be able to ride more comfortably with both arms in order to get back on his bike as a way to become stronger both physically and mentally.
James Daniel Spurgin is known to most as @1armpower via social media. He is an American disabled strength sports competitor, Project Manager and former United States Marine Corps Sergeant. He spent his youth in southern California where he competed in Muay Thai Kickboxing and Jiu Jitsu. In 2006, James was involved in a motorcycle accident that left him with a 100% brachial plexus injury to his right arm. He began his Disabled Strength career in 2012; to date he has competed in Powerlifting, Strongman, Highland Games, Crossfit and Olympic Weightlifting as an Adaptive Athlete.
He has adapted to using only his left arm in his sports and daily life. Riding a bicycle with one arm is particularly challenging; he wants to be able to ride more comfortably with both arms in order to get back on his bike as a way to become stronger both physically and mentally. He also longs for the sensation of speed on two wheels that he misses greatly from his motorcycle days.
