HOW CAMVETS MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Oct 25, 2019

At Challenge America, we’re often asked about our unique Makers For Veterans (CAMVETS) program. What is it, and why do we do it? What is the ultimate impact of CAMVETS? The program, a 5-month coordinated effort to bring together veterans in need with skilled teams to create solutions for disabilities such as PTSD and immobility, is unlike any other US Veteran-focused nonprofit program. So what makes CAMVETS different, and why is it important to the veteran community?

CAMVETS places Veterans first. When faced with amputation, paralysis or PTSD, many veterans are expected to adapt to their new reality using what already exists; too often the solutions that exist haven’t evolved, and in many cases the needs of the user are specific and customized solutions are necessary. Challenge America’s CAMVETS program starts and ends with our Veteran participants, placing them front and center in creating solutions as they lead the product development while working side by side with their Maker teammates. In order to truly regain independence and control, these veterans need solutions that are built for them - and that’s exactly what CAMVETS aims to do.

CAMVETS connects Veterans. The CAMVETS program isn’t just a way to build prototypes for physical problems. It’s also a way to bring Veterans together, to connect them with others who know and share their struggles, their realities and their hopes for the future. Military service is a unique experience: deployment is hard on soldiers and families, change is perpetually imminent, sacrifice and risk are high, and the bonds that develop between those who serve are unlike any other. In post-military life, many ex-soldiers experience feelings of isolation and loneliness in their new civilian environment. CAMVETS gives Veterans a chance to connect and relate to others who come from the same place and experience similar challenges. Although CAMVETS creates solutions for physical disabilities, it’s critically important that we also acknowledge and address that with physical pain often comes mental suffering.

CAMVETS gives Veteran challenges a face and name in the civilian world. Too often, visibility for the sacrifices made by our service men and women surface at the whim of the news cycle, or on Veteran holidays. Those who haven’t served are largely unaware of the challenges of military service. Our Maker teams bring their varied backgrounds and skills to the program under one mission: to create a solution for a veteran in need over the course of five months leading up to the Cleveland make-a-thon. CAMVETS Makers come to understand their Veteran teammate, going beyond the physical to learn about the unique experiences and perspectives one gains in the military. Our hope is that our volunteer Makers can not only feel pride in what they’ve accomplished through helping others, they also gain an understanding of what it means to serve.

So why is CAMVETS so important to us? CAMVETS helps injured veterans to feel heard, seen, understood and appreciated. The program gives Veterans hope, and is a way for them to help shape change and progress for other veterans and civilians alike through the solutions and prototypes developed over the course of five months. It is a way to communicate to the world that Challenge America and its partners are here to help with the process of not only regaining quality of life, but also meaning and purpose. In the words of one of our Veteran participants, “I feel there’s a sense of hope now, to go forward and live the life that I lost for 40 years.”

Makers for Veterans 2021 started on a high note with the final event in a year-long collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs to develop innovative solutions to the most urgent non-clinical challenges facing essential workers on the frontlines of COVID-19. This project produced 50 new products, including a low-cost telehealth case developed by Team HermTac, a portable physical therapy system developed by Team Wareology, and an exciting new wellness monitoring system developed by Team Okaya. These solutions and others keep our frontline workers safe while improving their ability to meet the needs of our most vulnerable friends and neighbors. In recognition of our efforts, the Small Business Administration awarded Challenge America the Lab-to-Market Ecosystem Responder Prize.
