Vision

Challenge America envisions a future where every service member, Veteran, and their families can access impactful resources and creative arts experiences that foster healing, dignity, and purpose.

Mission

We have made it our mission to connect service members, Veterans and their families to resources and solutions that build community and give purpose to their lives. From the beginning, we set out to challenge the status quo by designing and scaling innovative, evidence-based solutions to the needs of the military community - no matter where they live. By leveraging technology, creative arts and community solidarity, we are challenging America to think differently about how we serve our military.

Values

We hold ourselves to the highest standards in our programs, partnerships, stewardship of resources, and our work environment.

We believe…

  • in empowering our community

  • in creating an environment of belonging

  • in the transformative power of the arts to connect people, inspire growth, and promote healing

  • in innovative approaches that open new possibilities

  • in transparency and accountability

  • in the value of public service

History

Challenge America was founded by Houston Cowan as an extension of Challenge Aspen, a nonprofit that has provided adaptive recreation for people with disabilities since 1995. In 2005, Challenge America began offering year-round programs for service members returning from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. As outdoor recreation proved to be a powerful tool for healing and reintegration, the need for dedicated support grew.

To meet this demand, Challenge America Military Opportunities (CAMO) was launched in 2008 as a division of Challenge Aspen, focused on providing recreational opportunities for injured Veterans and their families. Through this work, the organization recognized a broader need: better coordination among the many resources available to Veterans. This realization inspired the creation of Challenge America - a movement to “challenge America” to connect military families with the resources and community support they need to thrive.

In 2009, Challenge America stepped onto the national stage with a moving musical celebration at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Led by honorary co-founders and world-renowned musicians Amy Grant and Vince Gill, the event paid tribute to the courage and sacrifice of military families and illuminated how art, connection, and community can heal.

Since that memorable debut, a host of renowned artists and public figures—including Fred Funk, Alison Krauss, Michael McDonald, Darius Rucker, Mac McAnally, Melinda Doolittle, Stephen Mansfield, Warren Miller, Robert Redford, Dennis Watson, Loren Roberts, and Bernhard Langer - have rallied behind Challenge America’s mission. The organization’s work has also received national recognition, with features on NBC’s Today Show and Hulu.

Today, Challenge America is a national nonprofit that builds networks of support for military families through innovative programs for Veterans. Through the therapeutic power of music and art, the Challenge America Music and Art Therapy Retreats bring healing, comfort, and renewed purpose to Veterans living with post-traumatic stress, military sexual trauma (MST), and other trauma-related conditions such as depression and anxiety. Veterans also find creative expression, meaningful connection, and lasting community through Challenge America’s national peer support networks - the Military Sisterhood Initiative (MSI) and the Challenge America Veteran Arts Community (CAVARTS).

    Amy Grant & Vince Gill

    Honorary Founders

Amy Grant and Vince Gillare honorary Co-Founders of Challenge America. In 2009, Amy and Vince launched Challenge America by hosting a benefit concert at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.. Amy and Vince remain loyal and active supporters of Challenge America’s mission and activities.

Recognizing the need to coordinate resources and information on both national and local levels, Amy Grant and Vince Gill envisioned a way to "challenge America" by connecting military and their families to the resources they need within their communities when transitioning from military back to civilian life. On June 8, 2009 in Washington, D.C., Amy and Vince launched the Challenge America initiative, which is now thriving in communities across America along with its Challenge America Makers for Veterans (CAMVETS) program.

Amy Grant’s career spans over 25 years and stretches from her roots in gospel music into an iconic pop star, songwriter, television personality, and philanthropist. Grant has sold more than 30 million albums and won six Grammys. Vince Gill is a member of the Grand Ole Opry, and has received 20 Grammy Awards to date, the most of any male Country artist. Gill is regarded as one of Country Music’s best known humanitarians, participating in hundreds of charitable events throughout his career. In August of 2007, the Country Music Association inducted Gill into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

    Houston Cowan

    Founder & CEO

Houston is the founder and CEO of Challenge America. Houston has more than 20+ years experience in non-profit management, which includes his role as CEO of Challenge Aspen, an adaptive recreation organization with a 4-Star Rating from Charity Navigator.

Houston, also the founder of Challenge Aspen, a world renowned non-profit providing year-round recreational, cultural and competitive programs to anyone with any disability, including programs specifically designed for disabled military, began to see the unfortunate growing need of injured military as the war in Iraq returned young men and women with severely debilitating injuries, amputations and traumatic brain injuries.

Recognizing the lack of coordination of resources and information between programs for all military across the country, making it difficult for them and their families to locate the services needed for a successful transition from battlefield to home front, Houston and his staff were compelled to act. The idea of "challenging America" to find ways to connect military with the resources needed to establish a "new normal" life was born, leading to the creation and June 8, 2009, launch of Challenge America, the initiative and the organization.

Daniel L. Brown - MD, FACHE

    Member, Board of Directors

David L. Brown, M.D., an anesthesiologist, is a leading expert on cancer and chronic pain management and opioid misuse. He survived his own prolonged life-threatening illness related to military-acquired hepatitis C, which gave him a particularly deep understanding of the needs of patients and their families facing end-of-life decisions.  His illness gave him a gift that no medical training provides – a first-hand look at how powerful incentives inside our health system quickly overpower the unique values and goals of individual patients, even with advance care plans in place.  Currently, he interacts frequently with families facing consequential decisions about advanced illness care.

He retired academically and clinically from the Cleveland Clinic, where he was professor and chairman of the Anesthesiology Institute. Previously, he led the departments of anesthesiology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center; the University of Iowa Hospital and

Clinics, and the Virginia Mason Medical Center, as well as serving as professor of anesthesiology at the Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Brown received his medical degree in 1978 as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society, at the University of Minnesota. In 1982 he completed his anesthesiology residency at Wilford Hall U.S. Air Force Medical Center, in San Antonio. Before that, he was a flight surgeon in the USAF for the 319th Bombardment Wing.
