TEAM DIGI: BUILDING THE FUTURE OF POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS MANAGEMENT

Nov 15, 2019

TEAM DIGI: Building the future of traumatic stress disorder management.

Imagine your world, your existence, shrinking out of control. It starts one day when getting out of bed seems impossible, which stretches to two, then three. Leaving the house becomes a battle, a fierce tug-of-war with your mind as fear and anxiety settle in, ever so gradually tightening its grip. Your independence wanes and the walls start closing in as you stop seeing friends and family, stop leaving the house. Until eventually, your world grinds to a halt and you find yourself in the prison created by the internal battle with your past.

Ginger is an ex-military service member who, each day, fights this battle. A survivor of sexual assault while an active duty military member, Ginger has suffered from PTSD for over 40 years. Today, she is taking control of her life through Challenge America’s CAMVETS program.

Ginger joined Challenge America: Makers For Veterans in the Spring of 2019. After matching with a team of developers and UI/UX experts, Ginger spent the next five months working with her team to create a solution to help assuage her symptoms - with the ultimate goal of helping others who also suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. The result eventually took the form of DiGi, the “Digital Service Dog”, an app that monitors heart rate, among other elements, to help its user manage symptoms of PTSD. DiGi also sends Ginger encouraging messages when she visits a new place, as exploring outside of her comfort zone is important to breaking through anxiety and forming positive associations and habits.

Now, the app is poised to move forward for further development through Challenge America’s CAMVETS program. Launched in 2018, CAMVETS was created to reach injured and disabled veteran heroes to help them regain independence and quality of life through customized solutions. Veterans like Ginger, who are brave enough to share their experiences and lead the development of these solutions, are a critical part of the program’s success. The hope is that Veteran’s lives are forever changed for the better, and these products find their way to mass production to help improve the lives of others facing similar challenges. Jon Morgan, lead developer of the DiGi app, walks us through the next steps of the process in creating this potentially life-saving application.

“We basically got to a proof of concept during the first CAMVETS event in the Spring of 2019,” Morgan explains. “We were able to get a good bit of the core functionality of the app to work but it was pretty buggy and built for a single user (Ginger). Designing and developing an app in a weekend is a challenge but what we were able to pull together worked for Ginger through the summer and early fall. Team Ginger then performed a complete redesign of the iPhone app, adding in more robust metrics and simple way to manage the Watch app. We also redesigned the Watch app but that's a little less obvious due to the strict design guidelines on Watch. The real work is happening in development.”

“We made some pretty big changes to how data is collected and stored and the team has been working on developing the apps in a way that aligns with Apples guidelines since our goal is to launch on the App Store in the near future.”

The team hopes to have the app well-tested and installed on multiple watches and smartphones in it's 'final' form by the end of the Fall 2019 CAMVETS design sprint, with an overarching goal to have the app submitted to Apple for review by Veterans Day.

Makers for Veterans 2021 started on a high note with the final event in a year-long collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs to develop innovative solutions to the most urgent non-clinical challenges facing essential workers on the frontlines of COVID-19. This project produced 50 new products, including a low-cost telehealth case developed by Team HermTac, a portable physical therapy system developed by Team Wareology, and an exciting new wellness monitoring system developed by Team Okaya. These solutions and others keep our frontline workers safe while improving their ability to meet the needs of our most vulnerable friends and neighbors. In recognition of our efforts, the Small Business Administration awarded Challenge America the Lab-to-Market Ecosystem Responder Prize.
