2021 Reflections from Challenge America

Dec 23, 2021

Makers for Veterans

2021 started on a high note with the final event in a year-long collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs to develop innovative solutions to the most urgent non-clinical challenges facing essential workers on the frontlines of COVID-19. This project produced 50 new products, including a low-cost telehealth case developed by Team HermTac, a portable physical therapy system developed by Team Wareology, and an exciting new wellness monitoring system developed by Team Okaya. These solutions and others keep our frontline workers safe while improving their ability to meet the needs of our most vulnerable friends and neighbors. In recognition of our efforts, the Small Business Administration awarded Challenge America the Lab-to-Market Ecosystem Responder Prize.

Virtual Music Therapy Retreats

This spirit of innovation continued in 2021 with the development of our first online music therapy program. Demand for our music therapy program exploded during the pandemic, so the development of an online version offered a safe and effective means of meeting this demand. Our first online program launched in the spring, which was also our first music therapy program offered exclusively for women Veterans. Challenge America has since partnered with the VA to run a year-long pilot project of this program at 5 different VA locations, with the goal of expanding our reach over time.

Inception of the CAVARTS Community

At the same time, Challenge America partnered with our friends at The Heartstrings Foundation to design and launch the Challenge America Veteran Arts Community, or CAVARTS. Early on, the Veteran advisory group for this project encouraged us to expand our focus beyond music to include all forms of art and we listened. Launched on March 15, CAVARTS quickly attracted widespread interest from Veteran artists and art-based organizations across the country. Now just nine months old, the CAVARTS membership exceeds 2,500 Veterans from all 50 states and 12 countries. Just in these first few months, we have partnered with Operation Gratitude to host a nationwide art competition, hosted more than 20 art workshops, and facilitated hundreds of Veteran connections through our Holiday Outreach Campaign. We have big plans for this project in 2022, so stay tuned for more on this front.

The Military Sisterhood Initiative

2021 was also a big year for our Military Sisterhood Initiative, or MSI. The nation’s largest peer-support network for women Veterans, MSI continues to play a pivotal role in the lives of its members. This year we were proud to exceed 5,000 members, all of whom turn to MSI as a safe and trusted space to connect with the one resource all women Veterans trust - their military sisters. We have big plans for MSI in the coming year, including new workshops on wellness and an exciting new career/education initiative. Stay tuned.

Climbing Mt. Elbert

As if to cap off an already amazing year, Challenge America recently celebrated a successful project that allowed four severely disabled Veterans to reach their goal of climbing Colorado’s highest peak: Mt. Elbert. This project involved more than six months of training and careful planning, culminating in a two-day climb to reach the summit at 14,439 ft. Another first for Challenge America, we are hard at work with plans to build on this success in 2022.Your support makes all of this work possible. We know better than most that the challenges in the Veteran community are great and at times may seem insurmountable, but we also know the opportunities to make a positive impact are greater. We are grateful for your support in 2021 and hope we can count on you to join us in the year ahead.

On behalf of the entire Challenge America family, I want to wish you and yours a safe and happy holiday season and a wonderful New Year.

Sincerely,
Dallas Blaney, PhD
