January, 2025 CAVARTS Spotlight Feature: Eldaliz Sanchez

Born and raised in Puerto Rico, this Army National Guard Veteran turned to painting as a way to heal and process life’s challenges.

After entering the military in 1997, an accident cut her service and her dream of becoming a doctor short. She went on to earn a master’s degree in clinical social work, channeling her resilience into both her profession and her art.

About:  
I was born in Puerto Rico where I currently live. Painting for me was a way of dealing with several issues. I went into the army in 1997 and due to an accident I had to get out that same year. My dream of becoming a doctor had to disappear but I went on and became a social worker with a master's degree in clinical social work.

What inspires you to create art?:
Water washes away tears.

What part of your life has benefited the most from your creative pursuits?:
I'm channeling my depression through my paintings.

Yes because it teaches me I can go as far as possible.

What is your process or ritual to get your creativity flowing?:
Just look for inspiration in nature and connect whatever my feelings are at that moment.

Don't give up. There's always a way to make it through whatever you're going through.
