April, 2025 CAVARTS Spotlight Feature: Noah Bellamy

This CAVARTist uses songwriting as a powerful tool for healing and connection. After facing major depression following his retirement in 2007, he picked up the guitar and began writing songs as a way to cope — a practice that has since become a daily passion.

Now working on his first album, Noah credits music with helping ease his depression and anxiety and finds purpose in sharing stories that resonate with others. Through CAVARTS, he values the community of Veterans who use art to support one another and keep moving forward.

What inspires you to create art?:
I started writing for mental health reasons, now I am writing almost daily. There is something about touching people through music that is incredible to me.

What part of your life has benefited the most from your creative pursuits?:
It has helped my depression, anxiety, it lets me escape and stop looking back at the past all the time.

Is it important for you to challenge yourself in your art? Tell us why or why not!:
Yes, in music there is no perfection, I get a little better with every song I write. I am always improving; I have always been driven to do my best at everything.

What is your process or ritual to get your creativity flowing?:
I just start playing on the guitar and find some sound and then the words just appear to me, I am not sure why but that is what works for me. I travel a lot and find inspiration in other people's stories and reliving some of my past.

What does CAVARTS mean to you?:
I have found a lot of great videos, and other Veterans that are using art to help them. It is so great to see so many willing to help others with what they have gone through. I enjoy the online classes and watching the videos of others making progress.

Our monthly theme for April is Songwriting for the Soul, but Noah submitted this in August, when our theme was Smaugust and we were celebrating dragon art. Here’s what Noah had planned for the month:
I am just writing songs whenever there is time.

What words of inspiration do you have for your fellow CAVARTists?:
It takes time to get good at anything, if you put yourself into your art, it will help you, I think for everyone it is different. Keep doing your art and reaching out for help and to help others. Keep moving forward, never stop, never give up, and reach out when you are in need.
