You Teach Me And I’ll Teach You…Pokémon!

In the CAVARTS Community, we are celebrating National Pokémon Day today!

National Pokémon Day is celebrated annually on February 27th, the day when Pokémon was first introduced to the world in 1996 and the delightful frenzy to “catch ‘em all” officially began.

First called "Pocket Monsters" in Japan, Pokémon was initially released on the Game Boy in 1996. About a year later, Pokémon was adapted for television, following a boy named Ash (US version) who was determined to become the greatest Pokémon master, “like no one ever was”.

Ash’s starter Pokémon and adorable companion Pikachu captured the hearts of children and adults all over the world with his plump mousey, squirrel-like appearance, rosy cheeks, round eyes, and electrical abilities. Originally voiced by Japanese voice actor Ikue Ōtani, the phrase “Pika Pika” has been echoed amongst children and adults all over the world, including in my own home, where I love to replace “Pika Pika” with “Piece of Pizza” whenever I’m in the mood for pizza! 🍕

Today, Pokémon is accessible through tv shows, movies, multiple video game consoles, cards, board games, phone apps, and more. The ever-growing library of Pokémon species currently contains 1,025 amazing creatures with different strengths and weaknesses.

Why are we celebrating National Pokémon Day in CAVARTS?

Because of Ken Sugimori's incredible signature art style that built a world like no other! 🎨 Ken’s work originally started from watercolor and ink and later blossomed into the world of digital art. Ken’s distinct style consists of thin, textured lines, selective outlining, and bright colors.

🎶 And would this post belong in February with our theme of “Music for the Soul” if I didn’t even mention the incredibly motivational theme song?

Performed by Jason Paige, the theme song was written by John Siegler and John Loeffler. The song is sung in first person by an aspiring Pokémon trainer (presumably Ash) that is determined to become the very best.

So, in honor of National Pokémon Day and the song lyrics “you teach me and I’ll teach you…” check out this informational video on the iconic art style of Pokémon and give it a whirl!
