Created by Veterans, for Veterans, the Challenge America Veteran Arts Community (CAVARTS) is the result of a rich collaboration between Challenge America and The HeartStrings Foundation. CAVARTS represents the culmination of a five year commitment to build an inclusive community that brings together Veterans of various backgrounds who support one another as they connect, learn, and grow through the arts.
In addition to Challenge America programming opportunities, further virtual programming and content are offered through the support of our Community Partner organizations, including Guitars 4 Vets, The Writer’s Garret, Veteran podcasters, and Tandy Leather.

Featuring interview-style stories and artwork from members of the CAVARTS Community.
August, 2026 CAVARTS Spotlight Feature #2: Casey Rusher
Meet Casey, an Army National Guard soldier and leather artist whose work reflects resilience, growth, and a love of creating. After learning leatherwork from a fellow soldier while mobilized, Casey has spent the past three years challenging himself to turn his ideas into practical, handcrafted pieces.
August, 2026 CAVARTS Spotlight Feature #1: Geoffrey Harris
Meet Geoffrey, an Army Veteran and lifelong CAVARTist whose creative journey began with a BFA in Sculpture from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1988.
Since then, he’s continued exploring the language of art through shape, form, color, and the patterns he sees throughout the universe—from the microscopic to the galactic.
July, 2026 CAVARTS Spotlight Feature #5: Charles Crivellaro
Charles served 21 years in the U.S. Army as Sergeant First Class before discovering a new creative passion in retirement. A self-taught acrylic painter for the past decade, Charles draws inspiration from love, family, friendship, and the joy found in everyday life.
His featured works, Retirement Years and Flowers, celebrate enduring love and the meaningful connections that enrich our lives. Guided by memories, dreams, and a spirit of creativity, Charles views art as a source of physical, mental, and spiritual fulfillment—and a way to continue growing, learning, and sharing joy with others.
July, 2026 CAVARTS Spotlight Feature #4: Ken Busby
Army Veteran Ken Busby Jr. is a songwriter, storyteller, husband, father of seven, and lifelong believer in the power of “three chords and the truth.” Drawing inspiration from family, faith, and lived experience, Ken crafts songs filled with honesty, emotion, and resilience.
Whether reflecting on sacrifice and grace in Unworthy or sharing the raw realities of personal hardship in My Personal Hell, his music serves as both a creative outlet and a source of healing. When he’s not writing songs, Ken enjoys life on the farm with his high school sweetheart, finding stories in the everyday moments that shape who we are.
***Trigger Warning: This feature and its accompanying songs contain themes of grief, loss, depression, suicidal thoughts, spiritual struggle, and emotional distress. These works were created during a period of profound personal hardship and explore feelings of hopelessness alongside faith, resilience, and healing. Please read and listen with care.***
