About CAVARTS

With more than 10,500 Veteran members, CAVARTS is a safe and supportive community where Veterans can leverage their creativity and the power of the arts to foster renewed purpose and meaningful connection. Through creative arts workshops, meaningful curated content, and community partnerships, CAVARTS empowers current and former service members to to express their stories through art, uplift fellow artists, and expand their creative practice.

Within this safe and supportive community, Veterans use the arts as a pathway to renewed purpose and belonging. CAVARTS offers a wide range of creative arts experiences, including leathercraft, songwriting, creative writing, podcasting, therapeutic music and visual arts workshops, concerts featuring Challenge America Songwriters, and follow-up opportunities for Music Therapy Retreat participants who wish to continue their guitar journey and creative development. Army Veteran and Gulf War Veteran, Mario has been creating art for as long as he can remember. During his military service, travel and new experiences shaped the way he sees the world, inspiring artwork rooted in memory, imagination, history, science, and exploration.

Working primarily in ink, Mario uses art as both a creative outlet and a form of meditation—transforming thoughts, dreams, and life experiences into powerful visual narratives. Through pieces like Woman of Modern Age and Veteran, he explores resilience, humanity, and the healing power of self-expression.

June, 2026 CAVARTS Spotlight Feature #2: Michael Diaz Saule

A Veteran of both the U.S. Marine Corps during the Gulf War and the Army Reserve during the Global War on Terror, Michael has long been surrounded by creativity through a family rooted in music and visual art. Drawn especially to photography, he uses his camera to capture meaningful moments, unique perspectives, and the quiet beauty found in nature.

His black-and-white photograph, Gooseberry Falls, MN, reflects his belief that life moves quickly and reminds us to pause and appreciate the world around us. Through photography, songwriting classes, and the Guitar 4 Vets program, Michael continues exploring creative expression while finding connection, healing, and a sense of belonging through the CAVARTS community.

June, 2026 CAVARTS Spotlight Feature #1: Paul Harman

After serving in the U.S. Army with the 2nd Battalion, 60th Infantry, 3rd Brigade, 9th Division during the Vietnam War and retiring from a 40-year career in law enforcement, 81-year-old Northern California artist Paul Harman found a new calling through art.

Working primarily in soft pastel, Paul captures the beauty of Yosemite, California’s coastline, and rural landscapes with a realist’s eye and deep appreciation for nature. Inspired by the changing light, dramatic scenery, and everyday beauty around him, Paul views art as both a creative challenge and a source of peace, connection, and joy in retirement.

May, 2026 CAVARTS Spotlight Feature #2: Theresa Adams

A United States Navy Veteran and former Air Traffic Controller, Theresa brings a lifetime of service, family tradition, and personal reflection to her creative work. Now living among the mountains—a striking contrast to her years stationed in the Southwest desert—she captures moments of memory and meaning through photography.

Her piece, Smokey Mountains, reflects a deep connection to past experiences and the power of art to refocus the mind on “better things, good times, and better places.” Through her creative journey, Theresa continues to challenge herself, build community, and find inspiration in both nature and shared experiences.
