Created by Veterans, for Veterans, the Challenge America Veteran Arts Community (CAVARTS) is the result of a rich collaboration between Challenge America and The HeartStrings Foundation. CAVARTS represents the culmination of a five year commitment to build an inclusive community that brings together Veterans of various backgrounds who support one another as they connect, learn, and grow through the arts.
In addition to Challenge America programming opportunities, further virtual programming and content are offered through the support of our Community Partner organizations, including Guitars 4 Vets, The Writer’s Garret, Veteran podcasters, and Tandy Leather.

January, 2026 CAVARTS Spotlight Feature #1: Jay Mauch
This Navy Veteran and retired USPS technician has found creativity later in life while caring for his wife and exploring new passions like guitar and invention. Art has become a meaningful outlet. One that brings focus, calm, and a way to turn ideas into reality. His piece, Memorializing After Death, was created as a tribute to a beloved family dog, blending creativity with remembrance. 🎨
December, 2025 CAVARTS Spotlight Feature: Barbie Huffman
This month’s CAVARTS Spotlight features an Ohio-based U.S. Marine Corps Veteran uses art as a way to express powerful ideas and personal connections.
Working primarily with acrylics and mixed media, their work often explores themes of social justice while also capturing meaningful moments with friends. Through pieces like Sky Bridge, art becomes both a creative outlet and a source of purpose and mental well-being. 🎨
October, 2025 CAVARTS Spotlight Feature: Ron Radmore
CAVARTist Ron is a U.S. Air Force Veteran (1967–1971) who discovered painting through the VA’s Whole Health Program during a challenging time in his life. What began as a therapeutic outlet quickly grew into a passion.
Inspired by the beauty of water, Ron now channels that inspiration onto canvas, finding joy, healing, and a renewed sense of happiness through art. 🎨
August, 2025 CAVARTS Spotlight Feature: Matthew Mikesell
Matthew is an Army Veteran who grew up in the wide-open landscapes of southwest Montana before building a life in Minnesota. After nearly three decades of service in the Army National Guard that included deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, he found creative refuge in the outdoors.
Through landscape photography, Matthew captures quiet moments in nature, like the rugged beauty of Lake Superior’s North Shore, sharing the same sense of exploration and reflection that inspires his work. 📷🌲
